KL-Special-Force

Sometimes, I wonder why I do not watch Malay movies.

After watching KL Special Force with my mom in the theatres, I know why.

KL Special Force tells the story of a gang that was hard for the police force to eradicate. It was up to Datuk Rosyam Noor’s character, Lan, to stop them. But is he the good guy or the bad guy? Especially after the leader of the gang gave him an ultimatum – to stop all these killings and robberies, be their spy.

Datuk Rosyam Noor is one of my fave Malaysian actors which is why I gave this movie a go. But man, even he cannot save this movie, for me.

What made me fall asleep at some point while watching the movie were…
1. Machine guns and bombs

How in the heck did they get the machine guns and bombs? Malaysia, like Singapore, has strict gun laws and not just any one can own a gun, unlike US. So, how did these people, the gang members, not the police force, own a damn machine gun… and BOMBS! Not just any homemade bombs terrorists mostly use but those actual hand grenades? It is not plausible. What is this? Do they think they are in Fast and Furious?

2. Dialogues

I actually rolled my eyes and laughed out loud many a times throughout the movie. They tried so hard to make this look and sound like a Hollywood movie, it’s laughable. Getting the gang out of a bank by calling them idiots and stupid are just plain… stupid. I don’t think the police in Malaysia would really do that. Again, this is not the US. Please don’t try to be Americans.

3. Storyline

The storyline is so confusing with the back and forth and egoistic fights. Man 1: I’m the senior. I’m better than you. Man 2: I’m younger than you. I’m clearly more skilful. Like please, both of you are idiots.

Also, there’s no emotional connection for me. I don’t feel pity for both sets of families. When the mom cried, I didn’t even shed a tear. One of the things Malay movies and dramas are good at is the emotional connection especially between mother and child. The movie clearly lacks that here.

Look at Korean movies as an example. They are so good with emotional familial scenes. When it comes to action genre films or fantasy flicks, Koreans do not let go of that emotional side of it. They still kept that core of what makes their movies so good. And I hope that Malay movies stick to what makes them good and branch out from there. Don’t try to be something else.

Overall, I give this movie a 2 out of 5.

Siti is just simply a Singaporean girl who has nothing better to do than watch movies and TV shows, listen to music and read books because, let's face it, what else can she, a non-adventurer girl, do in her spare time in this small island? This blog is for her to post her more "professional" reviews of movies, TV shows, books and music and as such, this blog is not spoiler-free so be warned. She may tend to get a little fangirly but fangirling is part of her life that she would not like to get rid of. When she is not sitting on her bottom doing this, you can find her going to work as a project manager in an online research panel company. However, that is the more boring (if that is even remotely possible) side of her life that she does not want to ever share.
