Another Sunday and another day for me to watch a movie on Netflix. Every year and especially at this time of the year, Hollywood would bring out a bunch of Christmas movies. This year, one of them is Our Little Secret, starring Lindsay Lohan and Ian Harding. It is No. 2 in the chart for movies in Singapore. The first one is a horror movie. I am not a fan of that genre. So, the feel-good Christmas movie it is.
Lindsay Lohan stars as Avery in Our Little Secret. Avery was a little nervous for the holidays as she’s meeting and living with her boyfriend’s family. She was doing all she can to try to impress particularly his mother, Erica (Kristin Chenoweth). But that plan was about to go downhill. His sister also brought her partner, Logan (Ian Harding), who was her ex-boyfriend. To be precise, her longtime ex-boyfriend whom she broke off with a sour tone.
Like any Christmas movies, comical family drama ensued with all sorts of personalities coming out.
I have not much to say about the movie. It is a typical Christmas family slash romantic comedy movie. Christmas movies generally are light-hearted and easy to watch with your whole family regardless of age groups. Our Little Secret is exactly the same. It has all the elements of a nice Christmas movie. There is a famous actress, Lindsay Lohan. There is a heartthrob, Ian Harding, and a hard-to-please mother, Kristin Chenoweth. The supportive father, Henry Czerny, and the little brat, Jake Brennan, are also part of the cast. Finally, there is the token little pet of the family, a dog named Veronica.
There is little much to be impressed about the movie since it is so typical. It makes you laugh at the ridiculousness of some scenes like when Avery tried to feed the dog chocolate cookies. It gives you second hand embarrassment when Logan tried to propose but was rejected. There is also romantic trouble when Avery suspects Cameron (John Rudnitsky) cheated on her. There’s a hint that he was with his ex, Sophie (Ash Santos). These will lead us to the main couple realizing they are meant to be. Happily ever after.
At the end of the day, a Christmas movie should result in you feeling good. If it manages to take you away from reality for a little while, it does its job.
One of my favourite Christmas movies is Home Alone. No Christmas movies have ever topped that for me. Okay, except Love Actually. I don’t think there are many that will surpass the popularity that is Love Actually. That movie led to other romantic movies using similar format. Examples include The Holiday, Crazy Stupid Love, and New Year’s Eve. Even Korean movies like A Year End Medley and New Year Blues.
Anyway, back to Our Little Secret. Do I recommend this movie? Not so much, unfortunately. If you have nothing else to watch with your family over Christmas holiday, sure, go ahead. But I would say go find something else to watch, if you can. Like Love Actually. Or Home Alone. Rewatch are sometimes nice too.
I will give this movie a 2 out of 5. Nothing impressive but it is not a bad movie to watch over the holidays with your family and friends.
