Sadly, I did not manage to catch any of the movies that’s released this week because real life calls. So, whenever that happens, I turned to Netflix, which is a good alternative. It does have a wide variety of dramas and films to watch and sometimes, really good ones that we did not catch on before.
And one of those movies is Boy Erased.
Now, I’m no Christian so whenever I do watch this kind of movies, I detach myself and try to watch it with an open mind.
You can pretty much see from the picture that it starred two recognizable actors – Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman. And the main role was taken by someone unfamiliar to me – Lucas Hedges. All of them did phenomenally well in this movie though.
Boy Erased is based on a true story written by Gerrard Conley based on his life going through conversion therapy, living under a devoutly religious Christian family. His story actually brought to light what actually went on behind this therapy.
As most biographical movies go, it’s sometimes hard to watch. If I may just spoil it a bit, he was raped by a man, whom he thought was a friend. That part was a bit hard to swallow. And as much as it’s difficult for me to watch, it takes so much strength and bravery for him to let people know that. Even till now, rape victims, especially male rape victims, have difficulty to report their cases and tell the truth. It shows in the movie – it’s hard for him to stand up and tell people exactly what happened to him.
And as any such movies go, you can see the hypocrisy behind everything that they said that you will just roll your eyes and go “Why and how do some people believe this?” None of it sounds sensible or reasonable.
Overall, it’s a heavy plot to take in but it’s really really good and the acting from everyone is just really well done and it deserved all the accolades being given to it. So, if you can detach yourself and watch this like a movie lover despite your own beliefs, then go for it. Otherwise, I don’t think it’s for you.
I give this movie a 4.5 out of 5. Minus 0.5 because I cannot stand the hypocrisy by some characters, who are obviously real, in the movie. Do they think they are perfect or what?
