From the poster above, you will see the actors’ names and all but let’s be honest here, after watching the movie, all these actors are just co-stars. The main lead of this movie is Godzilla itself. Also, this version of Godzilla is actually cute. No, really, I want my own Godzilla. Can I have this version of Godzilla to be my own Godzilla? Can I have a plushie of this Godzilla?
Anyway, Godzilla is about the king of the monsters, of course, but instead of it terrorizing Tokyo, Honolulu, Las Vegas and San Francisco (Author’s note: For the first time, New York City is spared from being destroyed by Hollywood, at least in the one I’m watching. The trailer shows New York being destroyed so…), it’s actually saving these pathetic humans’ lives by fighting two monsters who were mating and trying to give birth to millions of not-so-tiny possibly flying monsters. Ewwww! Oh yeah, Godzilla is the hero of this movie, ladies and gentlemen. We can’t depend on ourselves to stop from being invaded by monsters. We need another “monster” for it. I don’t know if there’s any hidden message out of this but if you want to get rid of the monsters under your bed, you probably need to buy yourself a Godzilla. Or something. I don’t know.
So, why do I call my own species pathetic in this movie? Because, as always, we human beings decide to do stupid things like wanting to kill Godzilla just from the sheer fear of it instead of opening our eyes to see that it’s actually trying to save us from being destroyed by those praying mantis-bat-like monsters, which is exactly where Ken Watanabe’s role in this movie is. Thank God for Ken Watanabe’s character. Another reason was that no one actually listen to Bryan Cranston’s character when he knew something was up. Instead, as always, there’s a cover-up until it’s too late and things were destroyed and lives were lost. I’m pretty sure that no matter how silly Hollywood movies can be, it’s trying to tell us something like how governments should be a little bit more transparent to its citizens and start listening to people rather than thinking that people who are not them are crazy. We do not want those praying mantis-bat-like monsters to give birth to mini praying mantis-bat-like monsters in the middle of Chinatown now, do we? Yeah, I thought so.
This movie is absolutely enjoyable to watch and the effects were actually pretty good. I was expecting Godzilla and the other praying mantis-bat-like monsters to look so robotic and fake but no, it wasn’t that at all. They look as real as they can look. The acting here was pretty okay. I do love Ken Watanabe and Bryan Cranston. Ken showed confusion, fear and then realization at the end pretty well while Bryan did amazingly well as a husband who lost his wife and trying to find the cause of it but at the same time, trying not to neglect his role as a father. I was pretty disappointed with the younger actors though.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson has first billing in this movie and I would have thought that he’s the token hero here but his character didn’t really do that much. I was actually pretty annoyed by his character. He knows a lot more about the monsters than the group of army soldiers he’s involved in and I wish his character had done a lot more in that sense – question the authority, etc. It’s not a meaty role for him, I feel, so there’s not much he could do. Throughout the entire movie, Elle Brody was so familiar to me and then it got to me, she’s one of the Olsen sisters – Elizabeth Olsen. I feel she’s better than Aaron in this case. Again, her character doesn’t do much in the movie but she gives as much as she could here, in terms of showing fear for her family’s safety amidst the chaos and she’s believable as a mother. She’s relatively unknown to me and this is the first time I’ve seen her acting so I shall reserve my judgement till I’ve seen a lot more of her. Her next big role, I believe, is Avengers 2. So, let’s see how this Olsen sister does.
Overall, once again, an enjoyable movie. My nephew’s review in one word: “Cool!” He didn’t even finish his popcorn because he was sitting rapt, watching the entire movie. So, yes, if you wonder if you should bring your kids along with the PG13 rating and “intense scenes” tagged on it, don’t fret. They would love it. It’s action-packed from start to finish so they would enjoy it as much as you do.
I give this movie a 4 out 5.

You’re welcome 🙂 I’m glad you love the review. As for your question on what’s the best show to watch right now, it’d be “X-Men: Days of Future Past”. I have not watched it yet though. Movie review will come out this weekend as usual with me. But it is the blockbuster movie out this week. There are not many movies out. It’s either “X-Men” or “Grace of Monaco”. But I don’t hear a lot of good things about “Grace of Monaco” though it stars Nicole Kidman. If you like horror movies, I think “The Quiet Ones” is interesting. It’s based on a true story and as they say, truth is scary than fiction. You have an awesome day as well 😀
