Movie Review: The Bling Ring

I almost forgot that I watched this movie last night but that does not mean the movie was bad. It just meant that I have a memory of a goldfish. But this morning while I was having a nice shower, I remembered that yes, Siti indeed watched this movie and shall write a review of it like she always does.

The Bling Ring is about 5 teenagers who went on a robbing spree of Hollywood celebrities’ homes, stealing branded goods like Loubotin, Chanel and Rolex, as well as cash found in not-so-hidden places. Eventually, they were caught when Lindsay Lohan and Audriana Partridge shared the CCTVs catching these teenagers in action. This movie is based on actual events.

Some people found the movie to be boring but I came in with the expectation of it not to be a “blockbuster” movie because it’s not. If you’re expecting that sort of movie, you came to the wrong theatre. It is written and directed by Sofia Coppola who is known for movies like The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette. I feel like watching a documentary of sorts while watching the movie. It details what happened from beginning to the time they were caught.

What I love about the movie is that it doesn’t “choose sides”, so to speak. You don’t feel bad for the teenagers, who are so obsessed with the Hollywood lifestyle, nor do you actually feel that bad for the victims who are Hollywood stars. Who doesn’t lock their doors? Who leaves their keys under a doormat? Who leaves their wallets with cash and credit cards in their cars and not locked them? And for goodness sake, if you have a stash of cash, please keep it in an actual safe that have passwords in it and not a safe that is left open for a bunch of teenagers to come steal them. I don’t want to say they are asking for it but they are, leaving all these things around for people to just come in and easily rob the whole damn house! You can’t be feeling so safe in your neighbourhood that you don’t do any of these security things! I live in Singapore, which is generally a safe and secure country and I still not leave keys under a doormat and I lock the door and all the windows in the house!

And what I love about the movie is it does not glorify what these teenagers had done. They are so obsessed with all these material things, which says a lot about the culture nowadays. Also, there are two main characters in this movie that showed two different reactions – Marc Hall was shown to be more uncomfortable and guilty about doing what he did while Rebecca Ahn was showing no remorse at all. And then there’s Nicki who played the victim by putting the blame on her friends and took the opportunity to use the limelight that she had to promote her website.

It’s not a movie for everyone but if you love movies in general, whatever kind of movie it would be, then go watch it. It’s not absolutely brilliant but it’s not exactly a bad movie either.

Siti is just simply a Singaporean girl who has nothing better to do than watch movies and TV shows, listen to music and read books because, let's face it, what else can she, a non-adventurer girl, do in her spare time in this small island? This blog is for her to post her more "professional" reviews of movies, TV shows, books and music and as such, this blog is not spoiler-free so be warned. She may tend to get a little fangirly but fangirling is part of her life that she would not like to get rid of. When she is not sitting on her bottom doing this, you can find her going to work as a project manager in an online research panel company. However, that is the more boring (if that is even remotely possible) side of her life that she does not want to ever share.

Good review Siti. These kids never really needed their own movie, which is sort of the problem it runs into. It’s just not all that interesting, no matter how hard you try to spin it.
