Movie Review: I Give It A Year

Oh finally, I post a movie review on this blog!

I just came back from watching I Give It A Year, a romantic comedy starring Rose Byrne, Rafe Spall, Anna Faris, Simon Baker, Minnie Driver and many more.

In a nutshell, it’s about two people who met, fell in love, got married and then everything fell apart. They did make it to a year. That’s not a spoiler. The movie title says “I Give It A Year”, so of course the couple made it to a year. Duh!

It’s a hilarious movie. I watched it after work and I’m having my period. I was feeling grouchy and absolutely horrible and uncomfortable but this movie made me laugh so much that I forget about my work, my period, feeling horrible and uncomfortable. That felt so good.

At the same time, it’s kind of realistic. Have you ever met that one couple that bicker all the time and seem to hate each other but they are married for more than 10 years and you wonder how did they make it and stand each other? I certainly have – my parents. This movie has that. There is also one quote in the movie that I personally agree with and goes something like: “We’re in love with the idea of being in love”. I’ve been in that situation. I don’t know if I was ever truly in love with someone. Unless you count Chris Colfer, who’s not into the va-jay-jays, one gazillion miles away and doesn’t know I exist.

This movie also gives me a lot of second-hand embarrassment that I think I covered my face with my shawl for half of the movie because, oh my god, some situations I do not ever want happen to me. Ever.

There are not many movies in Singapore this week except for horror movies, I guess. But I’m not really into horror movies. I get nightmares easily and the only time I will watch horror movies if it’s in the day. So, if you are like me – not a horror movie fan – and you don’t know what else to watch, you can watch this movie. It has two things that is worth your $10-$12 ticket – light-hearted and makes you laugh. It’s not the best movie ever but hey, anything that makes me laugh on a horrible day gets a thumbs-up from me.

And because she loves to yap so much about the things she loves, she magically (not really) made this blog.
