Lockdown Special Review: Itaewon Class (TV Series)

I’m surprised with myself that I can finish this TV series after Cells at Work in 8 days. It seems that the circuit breaker really gives me too much time on my hands. Usually, a TV series would take me weeks to complete. But here I am…

I decided to watch it due to a recommendation by not one but two colleagues of mine. And that there are a lot of references of the TV series elsewhere. So, I thought maybe it is a worth a watch. Is it?

Itaewon Class is a Korean TV series aired earlier this year from January to March and it is the 6th highest viewed cable drama in Korea. It stars Park Seojoon as Park Saeroyi, Kim Dami as Jo Yiseo, Yoo Jaemyung as Jang Daehee and Kwon Nara as Oh Sooah. The show basically revolves around Park Saeroyi and his end goal – seeking revenge for the death of his father. Along the way, he, who was a loner in school, made his own set of family – people who have dealt with unfairness and injustice of their own. Together, they created Itaewon Class.

Park Saeroyi is a character that you will want to side with and always want to root for. His sense of justice and sheer perseverance is something you would like to have but his chase for revenge makes him human. Who does not want revenge when the villain (in this case, Jang Daehee) just ruined your teenage hopes and dreams?

It is also easy for the general public who watch the show to root for him because not many in general public of Korea likes chaebol, which on its own means a large family-owned conglomerate but it got a really bad connotation as chaebol family usually feel like they are above the law. And the children or grandchildren of chaebol more often than not gets away from crimes that usually will get others in trouble. So, this TV series with Park Saeroyi who is a man whose hopes and dreams were ruined by a chaebol family and instead of being beaten down by it, he rises above it would surely win the hearts of the Korean people. And they did, looking at how the ratings go.

It started off slow but it picked up pretty easily and halfway through the show, you would just want to keep watching to find out if Park Saeroyi would beat the villain of the show. Of course, as any Korean dramas will go, there is a love story. But the love story does not supersede the main plot, which is good.

So, if you happen to see it being recommended to you or if you have nothing else to watch, you can consider Itaewon Class.

I give it 5 out of 5 – the ending closes everything off nicely. I am now able to go to sleep well, without having further questions in my head. It does not have any gaps, at least for me.

Siti is just simply a Singaporean girl who has nothing better to do than watch movies and TV shows, listen to music and read books because, let's face it, what else can she, a non-adventurer girl, do in her spare time in this small island? This blog is for her to post her more "professional" reviews of movies, TV shows, books and music and as such, this blog is not spoiler-free so be warned. She may tend to get a little fangirly but fangirling is part of her life that she would not like to get rid of. When she is not sitting on her bottom doing this, you can find her going to work as a project manager in an online research panel company. However, that is the more boring (if that is even remotely possible) side of her life that she does not want to ever share.
