Before writing this review, I did not realize my last movie review was also a Korean movie. I’m on a Korean movie binge I guess. Even prior to this, I was watching a few other Korean movies but only this movie is worth a writing.
Confession of Murder is a 2012 action-thriller movie starring Park Si-Hoo and Jung Jae-young. There were a string of murders that left South Korea in shock. Serial killer was on the loose, leaving the detective in charge feeling guilty for not being able to catch him. 2 years after the statute of limitation ended (15 years), an author named Lee Du-seok published an autobiography confessing to his crimes of the murders 17 years ago. From then on, it was a game of cat and mouse.
Now, the synopsis looks simple enough, interesting for someone who loves crime thriller like I do. But what I did not know was I was in for a ride. It has the usual scenes you would find in an action-packed movie – cars flipping around, fighting on top of a moving vehicle, etc. But what I did not expect was the plot twists. Yes, it’s in plural form. Plot twists. I wish I could tell you what happened but if I do, I would spoil the entire movie. It is the mother of all plot twists and it happened towards the end. I was shook. I think I could go bald after that. I guess you should not judge a movie by its synopsis?
Now, the story itself is Criminal Minds worthy. The serial killer is so psychotic and screwed up, it’s scary. Although I do find a couple of things frustrating:
- The “hero” for this movie, i.e. the detective, is not as strong. He’s mentally and physically weaker than the serial killer, which made the serial killer able to play around with him like a toy. If it’s a Hollywood movie, the detective would be played by Liam Neeson and the killer’s ass would get kicked 10 times in 1 minute. It’s so frustrating to watch. As an audience member, you would root for the hero but I was just left shaking my head thinking I could have probably kicked the man’s ass better than he did.
- Portrayal of the women in this movie is so embarrassing. Women are not just a bunch of people who would scream and fangirl over a cute guy. Come on now, stop downgrading us to such pathetic roles. In reality, no matter if the man is cute, if he’s a serial killer, I don’t think any woman would be idolizing him. If G-Dragon is a killer, I would not be here losing my mind over him now, would I? (Thankfully he’s not. He’s just killing us with his adorable face and songwriting skills.)
Despite the two points above, the movie is still one of the best crime thriller movies I’ve watched. So, if you like thrillers, I would recommend this movie. You can find it with English subtitles almost everywhere on the Internet. Just Google 😉
I give this movie a 4 out of 5.
