Maybe… just maybe… I should completely lower my expectation the next time I want to watch a DC movie. I always get disappointed everytime I get my hopes up when a DC movie comes out. Exciting trailers, mediocre movies. Every time. With the exception of the Dark Knight franchise. I do not know how and why that movie got it right. Oh wait, I know why – Christopher Nolan.
So, here’s why the new DC movie disappoints Siti yet again…
Suicide Squad followed up from the death of Superman in Batman v Superman, the other boring, sleep-inducing DC movie. The government questioned what would happen if the new Superman is evil. In came Amanda Waller, proposing the idea of fighting fire against fire – a group of villains against a possible villain. The Suicide Squad consisted of Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Boomerang, Killer Croc and El Diablo who were working with Rick Flag and joined by Katana. Before they go against a possibly evil Superman in future, they had to fight the evil Enchantress.
I’m not sure whether I was watching Clash of the Titans or an actual DC comic movie. Enchantress’ brother and Enchantress herself looked like they would fit in that movie. Enchantress, played by Cara Delevingne, was also laughable. I’m pretty sure she lip synced in the movie with someone else doing a voiceover because sometimes, she came in a bit late and it looked ridiculously hilarious.
I do not know any of the other villains with the exception of Harley Quinn (and Joker, which I’ll get to later) so I can’t say much about these characters. Deadshot is not meta-human though. Nothing he does makes me feel like he’s one. His superpower is not unique – he’s just a dead-accurate sniper to me. So, does Boomerang. Killer Croc and Diablo though are another story altogether. Diablo would fit in X-Men, and Killer Croc looked like he came from Spiderman.
Before I get to Harley Quinn, who is one of the very few positive things I could find from the movie, let’s touch on Joker. Joker was so hyped about before the movie premiered and I had a lot of expectations of what Jared Leto can bring for Joker but I guess the late Heath Ledger did the role so well I thought no one could do it better than him even though Jared Leto is a great actor in his own right. I just don’t feel this version of Joker at all. His role here is small and was just used as the “love interest” for Harley Quinn and a back-story for her, which is great if you think about it. This time, the male character is the side-kick lover for a female character. He’s not psychotic enough for me and he’s abusive. I guess that is true to the comics, when Harley did mention that she’s one of his victims. The whole modernization of Joker to make him look like a gangster does not go down well for me. I’ve seen a better cosplay than this.
Harley Quinn is the saviour of this movie, just like Wonder Woman for Batman v Superman. Margot Robbie nailed Harley Quinn so perfectly. She’s beautifully crazy. She’s nuts. She’s what Joker is supposed to be. She did what Heath Ledger brought for Joker. She’s THE Harley Quinn. She joked around but she kicked ass at the same time. But there was also an emotional side to her. You can’t help but love her. She should have her own movie, honestly. I would watch Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn more so than I would any new Batman or Superman movies. Just give us more Harley Quinn, please. She’s Deadpool nuts.
The soundtrack for this movie is the other positive thing. There’s a wide variety of music – Eminem, The White Stripes, Queen, Lesley Gore, Etta James, etc – which made this movie slightly less boring.
Overall, I would give this movie a 2.5 out of 5. It’s just halfway there. It’s not super boring that I would sleep through it but it’s not that enjoyable either.

After watching this movie, I felt like they were trying to copy the visual style and soundtrack of The Guardians of the Galaxy. They didn’t succeed though because the Guardians movie was more colorful. And I agree that one of the best things about this movie is the music. I was pretty disappointed with the rest.
