Movie Review: Star Trek Beyond

Ah, it’s been a while, isn’t it? It seems like I had not just been fasting from food and drink for the past month, but fasting from my weekly movie watching as well. I mean, not that I miss anything. I’m glad that the first movie I’m watching after a hiatus is Star Trek Beyond.

I am more of a Star Wars fan but then again, a geek will always be a geek no matter which star fandom one prefers. I do like Star Trek too. Come on, it’s space exploration. Someone surely envies Captain Kirk and his crew’s positions – except for the attacks by evil species (that, no one envies). And this new installment to the Star Trek franchise does not disappoint.

In the third installment, we started off watching Captain Kirk having some life dilemma of sorts, feeling like his life has become mundane, doing the same old thing (really, Kirk, really? Those bad guys coming after you inΒ the first two movies are boring you?), seeing his crew members’ having their own personal lives and relationships (cue: Sulu walking away with his husband and daughter. Awwwww…), he applied for a position as Vice Admiral of Yorktown.

While theΒ crew tookΒ a break, an unknown pod was detected flying into Yorktown. The occupant claimed that her ship was stranded in the nebula. The Enterprise, the only ship capable to navigate through it, was dispatched for a rescue mission only to be ambushed by an alien species led by its commander, Krall. The attack separated the crew members.

Then, I wish I could tell you more but I won’t because no spoilers here, people. Want to know more? You gotta watch it *cues evil laughter*

This movie has action & adventure, romance, bromances, humour. I don’t know what else the audience can ask for. The writing was clever, every line was witty. And of course, there’s SPACEEEEE! Seriously, the production and CGI teams did a tremendous job to make them all look believable. Hats off to them!

Did I mention bromances? Because Spock and McCoy have such an awesome on-screen chemistry. They are so awkwardly funny together. Of course, Spock and Kirk, and Kirk and McCoy. They are just an awesome trio. They should form a space boyband!

AndΒ yes, if you think you read my first paragraph wrong, you are not, your eyes are fine. Sulu indeed is gay. It’s all over entertainment news. Where have you been? Stuck on the Taylor vs KardashianΒ drama?

Anyway, I know that George Takei is against Sulu being gay and I did agree on the part that it’s goingΒ away from the original story. But after watching the movie, I thought that it was really nice to see an LGBT character (and the first in its history) in a loving relationship with a child. I was heart-eyeing seeing Sulu so happy (I’m a little biased here because I love John Cho – fly that Asian flag high!). And they do have quite a numberΒ of screentime. Even though half the time, they were separated since Sulu was busy being one of the heroes in deep space, it’s enough to let the audience know that yes, Sulu has a husband and a daughter (AND THEY ARE VERY CUTE OKAY!). I’m also glad that Singapore chose to still show it and not edit it out, which was very easy to do, but they didn’t and that’s a major thumbs-up for me.

All in all, I give this movie 4.5 out of 5. Don’t miss it!

Trailer…

(This is the most vague and confusing trailer in the history of trailers. This trailer makes you think it might be a horrible movie but jokes on us all. Paramount did a marvelous job on this one!)

Siti is a simple young lady who has nothing better to do other than sitting on her bottom, watching movies and TV shows, listening to music and reading books and having all sorts of opinions on each of the things that she loves to do. And because she loves to yap so much about the things she loves, she magically (not really) made this blog.
