I know, I know, I’m late. Like really late review on this one. I watched it about 5 days ago. I was sick… and lazy… but mostly sick. On top of that, I had no freaking clue what to write. It’s not exactly writer’s block. It’s just me trying to piece the whole X-Men movie timeline and concluded, at the end of the 5 days, that it’s a bloody mess.

I could go on and on about how Marvel’s The Avengers did it so much better movie-timeline-wise but you might think I’m biased. Technically, I love X-Men more so than I do The Avengers so I am actually more disappointed that 20th Century Fox screwed this up.

But let’s not go there…

Or we could… later… At the end of this review…

Apocalypse started where Days of Future Past stopped. Magneto disappeared to Poland, got married, had a child and tried to live as normal a life as possible. Keyword is “tried”. Until a very evil mutant named Sleeping Beauty… I mean, Apocalypse… decided to wake up from his thousand years’ slumber and wreaked havoc to the world by recruiting really strong mutants, one of them being Mr. Erik himself, after the people he thought were his friends accidentally killed both his wife and daughter. Meanwhile, Mystique appeared once again in the Xavier Institute seeking help from Professor X to find Erik with the help of Cerebro. Found they did but along with Apocalypse, who then kidnapped Professor X, due to his immense power. And it was left to the young students of the institute – Jean Grey, Cyclops and Nightcrawler – to try to save the day.

Overall, I do like this movie. It’s really nice to watch the story of the mutants that I love and how they came to be. And honestly, I love X-Men: First Class movies more than its predecessors. If not for the messed-up timeline, these series of movies would have been perfect.

Like I said, I love X-Men more so than I do The Avengers. I watched all the movies of X-Men. If you have watched all of the movies like I did, you knew that a lot of beloved mutants died in X-Men: The Last Stand, which was shocking to a lot of the fans. So, it seems that the writers for X-Men: First Class movies decided to do a do-over – retconned everything in X-Men: Days of Future Past, got all our beloved mutants back and sort of told the audience to forget what happened 10 years ago and just start from X-Men: First Class movies. Righttttt….

This is where I felt The Avengers franchise was a much better Marvel movie series than X-Men. It was thoughtfully written out – each individual superhero movie like Iron Man, Captain America and Thor somehow blend together well. So, if you are a movie lover like I do and love to watch the movies in chronological order time and again, you will not be confused because it gelled well together. X-Men, meanwhile, didn’t have that. So, if you want to watch the X-Men movie franchise, just forget about watching X-Men 1, 2 and 3 and the Origins and just start from X-Men: First Class. It gives you a  much better peace of mind.

All in all, I give this movie 3.5 out of 5. Blame the messed-up timeline and my very good memory, I guess.

Siti is just simply a Singaporean girl who has nothing better to do than watch movies and TV shows, listen to music and read books because, let's face it, what else can she, a non-adventurer girl, do in her spare time in this small island? This blog is for her to post her more "professional" reviews of movies, TV shows, books and music and as such, this blog is not spoiler-free so be warned. She may tend to get a little fangirly but fangirling is part of her life that she would not like to get rid of. When she is not sitting on her bottom doing this, you can find her going to work as a project manager in an online research panel company. However, that is the more boring (if that is even remotely possible) side of her life that she does not want to ever share.
