Movie Review: Captain America: Civil War

I just finished watching this most-anticipated movie of the year and I could hear the Tony-Steve shippers’ hearts a-breaking from miles away. Not me, I ain’t shipping anyone in this superhero world. It’s too weird for me but I ain’t judging anyone who do.

However, that “So was I” from Tony to Steve when Steve said “He’s my friend” about Bucky is probably the saddest thing to come out of any movie after “Always” in Harry Potter. Now, whenever someone says “So was I”, cue the cries.

Anyway, on with the review under the cut…

In Captain America: Civil War, we got a little back-story of what happened with the Winter Soldier right in the beginning, which sets the tone for the rest of the movie. Bucky Barnes was tortured and psycho-ed to be the assassin that he was. Back to the present, we had Tony, who was giving a speech in MiT and met the mother of a child the Avengers killed accidentally during Avengers: Age of Ultron. Tony, feeling guilty, agreed that the team does need to be governed, when the Secretary of State proposed the idea, which Steve opposed to. The idea still went ahead with Tony, Vision, Natasha and Rhodey agreeing to it. As it was about to be announced in a United Nations meeting, a bomb went off killing Wakanda’s king with the suspect being made to be Winter Soldier himself. Steve, going against Natasha’s warning, went in search for his friend and thus, the Civil War began.

I wish I could reveal more but this blog is more or less spoiler free. Tee-hee!

This movie is slightly more mellow than any other Marvel movies until Spiderman came into the picture. And it’s appropriate because no one wants to see the Avengers divided but divided they were in here and it’s making all of us, including the superheroes themselves, uncomfortable – Which side do you choose? Which side is right? Or are they both wrong? Or are they all victims to some other villain?

I kind of spoiled it a bit there. Sorry about that.

In any case, it’s hard to watch your favourite superheroes going at it against each other for 2 hours and a half but that’s what happened and it’s sad and thus, the movie is sadder than most Marvel movies. It’s probably sadder than Titanic (I’m kidding, it’s not. Tony-Steve war, as sad as it is, will not win against Jack and Rose with that bloody plank. Stupid piece of wood!).

What I do love about this movie is Disney working with Sony and got Spiderman in. This, everyone, is what happened when big studios put aside their differences and work together for the fans. They listened, they gave and boy, weren’t we all ecstatic about it! Finally, Spiderman in Avengers where he should be from the start! Tom Holland is perfect as Spiderman. Slightly awkward in the beginning of his appearance – who wouldn’t with RDJ in front of him. But he was hilarious after that and probably more comfortable in his role after he got over the fact that RDJ was in front of him. Tom held his own among his much-older cast members and that’s one of the best praises anyone could give such a young actor, I’m sure.

Now, both studios will earn a lot from their work together and they will work together once again for the new Spiderman movie starring Tom Holland and, you guessed it, RDJ will be guest-starring. And can we hope for Disney’s Marvel to work with 20th Century Fox to bring in Deadpool, X-Men and Fantastic Four in Avengers? Imagine Deadpool and Spiderman together. Hello, new bromance!

Overall, as always, Marvel Cinematic Universe saved the superhero movie world by gifting us mere mortals with another kick-ass superhero movie and I can’t wait for more with the two interesting post-credit scenes and I’m still trying to grasp on one of it. I’m not going to say what it is, you would have to watch it yourself.

I give this movie a deserving 4.5 out of 5 (0.5 missing because until they somehow bring in Deadpool, X-Men and Fantastic Four in Avengers, this .5 will be missing forever! Mwahaha! Are you listening, Disney and 20th Century Fox?)

Siti is just simply a Singaporean girl who has nothing better to do than watch movies and TV shows, listen to music and read books because, let's face it, what else can she, a non-adventurer girl, do in her spare time in this small island? This blog is for her to post her more "professional" reviews of movies, TV shows, books and music and as such, this blog is not spoiler-free so be warned. She may tend to get a little fangirly but fangirling is part of her life that she would not like to get rid of. When she is not sitting on her bottom doing this, you can find her going to work as a project manager in an online research panel company. However, that is the more boring (if that is even remotely possible) side of her life that she does not want to ever share.
