How to know that you are getting really old for some things? Other than your own age, obviously? When you get really tired of the young adult dystopian fiction world. Well, at least for this movie series. There comes a point when lovesick puppy look and kissing and/or hugging every single time the two lead characters meet is too much. There are enough PDAs on the MRT trains that seeing similar things on the large screen is making me puke and throw popcorns on the screen. Fortunately, I did not have popcorns with me nor drinks (being ill is one thing, my neighbour’s smelly foot is another) so I was not wasting my money on something worthless. Other than the movie ticket.
Allegiant is the third instalment of the Divergent series and Part 1 of the final book, following the footsteps of Harry Potter and The Hunger Games series.
And like every other instalment in the series, Tris was off to save the day after being curious and rebellious yet again. Girl needs to learn that curiosity kills the cat (or her friends. Oops… spoiler!) This time, she’s curious about what or who lies beyond The Wall. After convincing Four and saving her brother from execution, they, along with Peter, Christina and Tori, set off to climb The Wall only to meet a desolate land filled with toxic air. They trudged on and managed to be rescued by futuristic-looking army and was brough into an equally futuristic-looking land to find out that they were being observed all along. But are these people as good as they make themselves sound?
The Divergent series should just be called the “Trust No One” series. I’m starting to think that everyone is evil except for the small group of people around Tris. And honestly, it’s not a lot of them. I sound really tired in this review and I am because the plot is almost similar one instalment after another. At least in Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, we know there’s one really evil person out there that at the end of the day, Harry and Katniss had to vanquish – Lord Voldermort and President Snow – and the series revolve around the journey of the two characters defeating them. In this series, there are too many “evil” people that I’m starting to lose count or the story is losing its plot. All I’m getting in this series is the us (Tris and Four) against the world (everyone else).
But the savior of the whole movie is actually Peter, the conniving person that he is. As bad as he is, he is actually funny. And thank God for that or this whole movie will be an utter waste of my time. Miles Teller is really a young gem and the audience should all thank him for his role as Peter.
Also, I personally feel that this final instalment really does not need a two-parter. Harry Potter series was split into two for the final book because if you read the book, the seventh book probably equals a dictionary. I wish I’m kidding but I’m not. When I threw the book across the room, it landed with such a loud thud due to the size of it that my parents had to run to my room to find out what happened. That’s how big it was. Therefore, splitting the final movie into two was only fair and reasonable as it cannot be squeezed into a three-hour movie. With that said, there’s absolutely no reason for The Hunger Games to do the same and now the Divergent series. I’m pretty sure a lot of the things can just be cut away and the audience would know none the better. Right now, it looks more like the studio is trying to squeeze out money from the fans of the series rather than staying true to the book.
Nonetheless, I would still watch Part 2 of the movie since I’ve already watched it from the start and I want to know the ending, god damn it!
All in all, I’m giving this movie a 2.5 out of 5. Split right in the middle. I would have given it a 2 out of 5 but Miles Teller saves the entire movie so thank him.
