Yesterday marked my first time watching a horror movie in the cinema. I was all ready and set with a shawl to cover my face whenever the frightening scenes were on screen and half of the time I did but my hoodie would probably have been enough. As a non-fan of the horror genre, I am actually glad that I chose to watch Senior instead of other scarier horror movies to watch in the cinema because God knows I might have actually peed in my pants. Literally.
In the latest horror movie offerings from the land of smiles, Senior tells the story of Mon, an outcast in an all-girls Catholic school, who had a supernatural power – she can smell spirits. One day, she smelled the spirit of Senior, who came to seek her help to solve a murder mystery in the school, which was previously a palace where a princess was allegedly murdered by her gardener. Together, they fought both the living and the dead who were trying to stop them from finding the truth. But who is Senior? And where did he come from?
Why this movie is perfect for me to watch is because it’s 50% romance and 50% a mix of horror and other ridiculous stuff. You can look at the two main characters as the Thai version of Casper. Audience cannot help but root for these two to end up together even though we know it would be impossible to happen but because of the 10% ridiculous stuff that happens in the movie, we held on to the tiniest of hope.
Despite all that, I have to give a hand to the make-up artistes. Even though this is not the scariest movie that Thailand has to offer, the ghosts are still freaking scary – except Senior (he’s like the Thai version of Casper). The make-up are so awesome and scary that I still had to cover my face with the shawl whenever the ghosts appeared on screen.
What I do like about the movie is that they did tell the reason as to why spirits roam a certain place or why it seems like they can pass through walls. Not that I know if that’s true, of course. But in any case, the writers made a point to explain through Senior, which makes it somewhat “educational”.
To end it off, if you are like me, not a fan of horror movies but might want to dip your toe into it a little, you can start with Senior. You would appreciate the humour as well as the romance while covering your eyes whenever the scary parts come on.
I give this movie 3 out of 5. Not a bad movie although it has a few ridiculous scenes.
