Lots of people have been waiting for Deadpool, Marvel’s smart-ass-tic anti-hero, to have his own movie. We had been watching teaser clips after teaser clips after teaser images and finally, the wait is over. Deadpool is now on the big screen and I felt like I’ve been blessed by the Comic God!
Behind the mask of Deadpool is Wade Wilson, an ex-Marine who turned mercenary in New York City, according to the movie at least. He met an escort, Vanessa, and lived a happy, sex-filled life until it spiraled down when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Desperate to live, he was lured by an offer to cure his cancer but what met him instead was torture. The villain, Francis, injected him a serum that triggers mutation. He was tortured for days and when that resulted no success, he was strapped into an airtight chamber that reduced the oxygen in the air, which severely disfigured his face and skin but also created a healing factor for him and rendered him immortal. Angered, he managed to escape the chamber with the intention to kill Francis only to get the whole building burned down. Alive but scarred, he then went on a mission to find Francis and kill him, sense of humour intact.
From the minute the introduction started, you know this will not be like any other superhero movies. The introduction got the entire theatre in stitches. It’s the most sarcastic introduction ever. Which other movie could you think of that introduced its producers as “some asshats”, the writers as the “real heroes” and the director as an “overpaid tool”? Which is not exactly wrong because let’s be honest, we have all thought of that.
Deadpool, similar to the comics, broke a lot of fourth walls with the many internal monologues and conversing with the audience. It was strangely quite interactive. One of the best scenes (and there are a lot of great scenes) was when Deadpool went to the Xavier Institute of Higher Learning, found only Colossus and Negasonic and said: “It’s like the studio can’t afford another X-Man”, triggering huge laughter from the audience.
I have nothing bad to say about this movie because all my expectations for it were met – mainly that it stayed true to the comic.
Can I also say that Marvel has a heck of a way finding the best actors and actresses to fit a role? Ryan Reynolds is just perfect for Deadpool because if you follow this man on Twitter, you know that this man is just savage. And Deadpool is absolutely perfect for him.
So, I’m giving this movie a 5 out of 5 and another 5 out of 5 will watch again. And if you have not watched this movie, please do not bring your children. Deadpool is rated M18 for a reason.
