I know it’s been out for a week or so now in Singapore but I just watched it earlier today, only because 1) I was not in the mood to watch any movie last week due to haze and the general elections; and 2) there is no movie out this week that I would want to watch so might as well.
I have to say that the Maze Runner trilogy is looking to be one of those movie adaptations that is way better than the books itself. The books (or book since I only read the first book) did not interest me at all, most likely because the words used threw me off plenty of times during my reading and it really spoiled my enjoyment. Honestly, if you want to use the word “fuck” or “shit”, just use them and do not create words that made it really childish. Let’s face it, it is not a children’s book or will it ever be. So, the author should have just gone along with using the words.
Anyway, we are not here to talk about the book but about how awesome the movie is (I just spoiled what my review would ended up to be).
The second installment to Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials, followed up from the first movie when they were rescued from a group that was apparently rebelling against WCKD. From the get-go, Thomas was suspicious of the “rebel” and was proven right when another escapee, Aris, showed him the truth behind the group. When Thomas found out that he and his friends were in trouble, he quickly gathered them to escape from what they initially thought was their “safe haven”. When they did eventually escaped, they met another obstacle – zombies. Will they ever get to their destination – finding the resistance fighters up in the mountains?
Yes, you read the above right – zombies. There are actual zombies. But I think most of us are clued in on this one. What else did you expect from a “virus” that’s infecting the population? Of course it’s zombie apocalypse!
The movie made you sit up and at the edge of your seat from the start. It was jam-packed with action and a little horror (I was watching those scenes through the gaps between my fingers). I also really enjoyed the chemistry between the young cast, especially the boys. You truly believed they are friends and can never ever be separated. Aww, bromance!
Another thing I love about it were the effects and the cinematography. I absolutely love the apocalyptic world they created – empty and depressing, pretty much what the maze runners were feeling. It strangely reminded me of Wall-E. The zombies, meanwhile, were really creeping me out. If I don’t get nightmares from them, it’d be a miracle. (SPOILER!) When one of them got infected, the injury was so gross I thanked God I was not eating or drinking anything while watching the movie. The lightning storm that came somewhere in the middle of the movie looked like something from a disaster movie.
All-in-all, the acting, effects and cinematography combined made it one of the best YA movies ever.
If you have not watched it yet and are intending to watch it, catch it before the run ends. I give this movie a 4 out of 5.
The trailer…
