Before I get to the actual movie, can I just talk about the short animated movie that was aired before Inside Out called Lava? Of all the shorts that they made, I think this is one of those less interesting ones, for me personally, because it was so cheesy. I appreciate cheesiness because if you have ever looked past my blog entries and onto the sidebar filled with my latest tweets, I can be SUPER cheesy. But this cheesiness, I can’t appreciate. I could only face-palm and wrap a shawl over myself to cover my eyes during the entire movie. It might have affect my mood for the actual movie…
Inside Out is the latest Disney Pixar’s animated movie about a bunch of moods – Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Anger, Fear – inside this young girl named Riley. These moods control what Riley would say, feel, think, etc. You can think of it as the little voices in your head, as the tagline says. Really simple storyline but there is more to it: What if two of the moods, Joy and Sadness, are not around and you are filled with just Disgust, Anger and Fear? We all know that’s not a good idea but I will not spoil anything for you.
I have a high expectation for the movie in all honesty because I saw the gifs floating around Tumblr a lot of times, especially from Sadness. But I should not have done that. Every time I do, I always get disappointed. And I did.
I watched this movie early yesterday and I could only write a review of it today because I forgot half of what it was about. Yes, it’s forgettable. Out of all the Disney Pixar movies (and I love Disney Pixar), this would be my least favourite and one I would not want in my DVD collection.
I could count how many times I laughed in one hand during the entire movie and it’s mostly due to Sadness because I feel that character so much (even though my personality test said I’m Joy. The irony!) The rest of the time I was almost bored out of my mind.
I get the heart of the story. For example, I found Joy annoying in the beginning (that is why I’m amused that I’m Joy because I would find myself annoying then) but towards the end, I could quite relate to her because she put aside herself to make others happy. Or the fact that all these moods relate to growing up. It’s not just about moving to a new place but also growing up in general, which a lot of young adults and parents in the audience can relate to because we have been through all those phases.
But I still find it forgettable. Maybe this is because the core audience is for the young ones and the story needs to be as simple as possible for these kids to understand. Though I have to say that the ending of the movie is really hilarious and again, I will not spoil it for you but that’s one of the few scenes that I could recall.
In any case, I would still give the movie 3 out of 5. It’s not that bad but it’s not the best out of Disney Pixar.
Trailer…
