For my American readers, this would seem as a whole lot of surprise that I have watched Avengers: Age of Ultron. But it is released in Singapore and other parts of Asia first before the Western countries. It might be a good strategy as Asia probably has a higher rate of piracy so releasing it here first lower that chance of such a big budget movie being pirated. Anyway, so yes, I have watched Avengers and it has all the things you expect the movie to have – action, comedy (as all Marvel movies tend to have) and a little bit of drama.
Age of Ultron began as the Avengers hunted down Wolfgang von Strucker and his team who was holding on to Loki’s scepter. The superheroes were about to succeed when the twins, Pietro and Wanda Maximoff (Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch respectively), decided to stop the heroes’ advance. But Wanda had a better idea – she infiltrated Tony Stark’s mind and used his fear of losing his superhero friends as a means to get him to convince Thor to hold the scepter a little longer and find out the power of the Infinity Stone that powered the scepter. Tony, with the help of Bruce Banner, found that the stone was more powerful than the one powering Jarvis and decided to work on their personal project, Ultron. They both thought it was unsuccessful until Ultron took on the life of his own as a robot, killed Jarvis in the midst and attacked the heroes who were having a dinner party. It was later found that it was the plan of Scarlet Witch the entire time due to what she and Pietro thought was Tony’s fault for their parents being killed. They then found out that Ultron had a more sinister plan and decided to help the Avengers stop him.
What I love about the movie is that we get to know each of the superheroes’ insecurities. They are superheroes who seemed invincible but each of them has their own weakness, which made them even more human. We also found out more about Black Widow and Hawkeye. Although I do know a little about Black Widow’s background, it was still good to know the full story. Hawkeye’s was actually surprising. And apparently, it surprised the rest of the Avengers as well. But the shippers of Black Widow and Hawkeye would not like it when they find out Black Widow’s love interest is actually… Bruce Banner. Say what? Didn’t see that coming, did ya? Yeah, me neither.
I have a new favourite superhero though, The Vision, the successful creation of Helen Cho, Tony and Bruce with the help of Thor. He is so cool and adorable. Coolly adorable.
But what makes a movie like Age of Ultron good is obviously the action scenes. Here, I was a little bit disappointed, in particular at the beginning. It looked too “cartoonish” and obviously fake in the first action sequences. I found that a little discomforting since this is Marvel Cinematic Universe you are looking at. I would have thought they would have made this more smooth and real. Other than that, it was pretty cool. I particularly like when all the Avengers were together and there was this awesome slow motion action scene that I was so entranced with. I could not forget the scene even after two days. It was really good. Gavin Free and Daniel Gruchy of The Slow Mo Guys would have approved it.
All in all, I really enjoyed it and I’m pretty sure all of Singapore did as well. If you have not watched it yet, or it has not yet been released in your country, do make it a point to watch it. Absolutely enjoyable. Also, do stay on till the credit is over. As you know, Marvel movies always include the special extra scenes.
I give this movie a 5 out of 5.
