(Also known as “Big Bang”)
(Also known as “How Did Siti Even Get Into This?”)
People say “curiosity killed the cat”. But in my case, curiosity didn’t kill me but it just gave me one more thing to fangirl about and to include in a list of things I hyperventilate over.
First, let me admit that I was not a fan of K-Pop. It’s not because I hate the music or that the singers or artistes weren’t talented. No, I just never get to come across K-Pop songs with the exception of “Gangnam Style”, which is probably not the best way for someone like me to understand why some people like it.
So, when there was a TV advertisement about a K-Pop “super group”, Big Bang, coming down to Singapore for the SG50 Countdown, I thought this would be a good time to figure out the reason for fans queuing up for hours to watch the band performing the first concert in 2015.
It was past 12 midnight and the hosts introduced the band amidst screams from the crowd. And then, as they say, the rest is history…
The first song, “Fantastic Baby”, came on, and I thought to myself: “Okay, this is pretty catchy.”
The second song, “Tonight”, came on, and I thought: “This song is nice. I should get this into my playlist.”
By the time “Good Boy” came on, I knew I was screwed and that the moment I got my hands on a computer, I would be YouTube-ing them. My gut was not wrong. I went to YouTube, and from watching just their music videos to watching them on variety shows to me finally falling head over heels in love with their endearing personalities.
Some people argue that K-Pop bands might not be authentic because they are “manufactured”. But, really, what is the difference between the singing contests like American Idol, The Voice and X-Factor giving us the likes of Kelly Clarkson and One Direction with Korean entertainment companies who create idol pop bands like Ben & Jerry’s giving out free ice-cream?
To be honest, does it really matter? As long as the artistes are passionate about what they do and are sincere in doing them on top of being talented, it should not matter how they came about. Everyone has to start from somewhere.
Seeing Top, G-Dragon, Taeyang, Daesung and Seungri doing what they love and giving their all on the Marina Bay floating stage for the fans, and from what I can see from the variety shows, enjoying each other’s company, manufactured or not, they came out tops. They survive the industry for quite long now (oh Siti does her research) and seem to be going strong.

Is Siti now a VIP (a name given to fans of Big Bang)? Maybe… (so says the person who is currently clutching her Taeyang’s concert tickets).
Has Siti finally succumbed to the K-Pop fever? I’m not so sure since I’m currently just listening to Big Bang but hey, I’ve come to learn this new year that anything can happen when you’re curious enough to find out.
Here are some of my favourite tracks from the band and one of the members (that this one has fallen head over heels for):
Tonight
(Top’s ending line actually made this one fans herself.)
Lies
(I laughed because who gets murdered by a pineapple?)
Good Boy
(I use this video instead of their official music video because look at that hella good choreography!)
Ringa Linga by Taeyang
(Another dance performance video because seriously look at the moves!)
Wedding Dress by Taeyang
(I saved the best for last. This is my fave song at the moment. I don’t know about anyone else but if Taeyang dances like that in front of me, I will wear the wedding dress and marry him straight away.)
