Also known as the movie with the longest title ever by Disney.
Alexander is one of the movies that came out this week in Singapore. I decided to give this one a go because 1) the trailer looks nice and 2) I need a laugh. And it’s not a bad choice.
The movie is about Alexander who just does not have a very good day, not just for one day but every single day, while the rest of his family seems to have a perfect life – mother was going to be promoted to Vice President, father had a job interview, big brother had a hot girlfriend and was apparently going to be crowned the Duke of Prom, big sister was the lead for a high school production of Peter Pan and baby brother is, well, being a baby brother. Alexander, in the meantime, was a laughing stock of the school after a picture of his face photoshopped to a girl’s body was shared to his peers, his birthday party was overshadowed by the “birthday party” of a popular boy in school and he almost burned down the science lab. So on the midnight of his birthday, he decided to wish that his entire family has a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day so that they could understand what he went through and that wish came true the next day.
Pretty straight-forward, if you ask me. The funny part does not actually come until the entire family had their most horrible day ever. And it’s a second-hand embarrassment galore. Half the time, I was watching the movie from behind the popcorn box, not because it’s scary but it’s just embarrassing to watch, and I know at some point all of us has gone through a day that was just so horrible. But as it is a Disney movie, there’s definitely a happy ending.
It’s a feel-good comedy for the whole family. So if you have 1 hour and 21 minutes to spare and you are not into anime (Initial D), or a serious Oscar-bait thriller (Nightcrawler), this would be a good choice.
I give this movie a 3 out of 5.
