Red Rising by Pierce Brown
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is what happens when you don’t read the publication year/date/whatever – you didn’t realize that the book is super new that the next book is not out yet and now you’re gorydamn depressed because oh my god, what is going to happen?
That is exactly what’s happening to me right now. I am feeling so lost and the last time I felt that way was “Harry Potter” when I had to wait year after year for the next book to come out. So I did a little googling and by Zeus, I have to wait till next year for the sequel? Who do I have to kill to get the advanced copy?!
Anyway, “Red Rising” is about Darrow, a Red, which is a mining colony and the poorest in Society in planet Mars. Reds were mining to save the Earth and make sure that Mars will become inhabitable for the other Earthlings. His seemingly happy life (albeit poor) was turned upside down when his wife was punished to death for singing a banned song. Darrow was about to as well when he was saved by a group of rebellions named Son of Ares. There, he found out the truth – the Reds were not mining to save Earth. Mars were already inhabited by the Golds – the highest colour in Society. He was then assigned to infiltrate the Institute Academy, a place where they trained soldiers, and where the expected end result is to lead an army.
My crazy antics earlier was reasonable. This book was slow at first and then it just picked up in the middle and you could not stop reading it. You just needed to know what happened next. And what I love about the story is that it’s more complicated than just infiltrating the Institute and it’s not just politics – there are emotions and feelings along the way, actual genuine friendships formed. And that makes the story complicated. You really want to know what will happen to these bonds in the future. And that is why I need the sequel NOW. Right now.
So, I will just sit here and cry probably for the next couple of months until the next book is out.
