Movie Review: Dracula: Untold

dracula-untold-posterIf you are a fan of Game of Thrones like yours truly, you will find familiar faces in this movie other than Luke Evans. A hint: There’s a Stark and a Lannister.

Anyway, Dracula: Untold tells the story of Count Dracula and how he came to be the famed mythological vampire. Instead of adapting from the book by Bram Stoker, the director, Gary Shore, decided to dig a little deeper and started of with Vlad the Impaler and how he sought the help of a mysterious being hiding in the depths of Broken Tooth Mountain. That mysterious being was Master Vampire. To protect his family and his kingdom from the wrath of Sultan Mehmed II, who demanded 1000 boys, including his own son, Vlad made a deal with the Vampire for the strength of 100 men by drinking his blood. But it came with a price – he would feel the thirst for human blood. If he managed to resist it, he would lose the power after three days and would be a normal human being again. But if he didn’t, he would succumb to the dark magic and be a vampire for eternity.

I have no qualms about the casting for this one. I did watch 1992’s Dracula before and Gary Oldman kind of spoiled it for me – he was brilliant in the movie. But this one wasn’t bad. Luke Evans is sexy enough to be a Count Dracula. Dominic Cooper was evil enough to be Sultan Mehmed II. The effects and the fighting scenes were also reminiscent of 300 so overall, it was not bad.

But it was also not that good enough for me to go “Woah, it’s super awesome. Go watch it or you’ll die”. I do enjoy it but not that much to watch it again. I love the ending though. I won’t tell you what the ending was because then I would spoil the entire movie for you. I would spoil just a tiny bit – we do not have to wait that long to see Rickon Stark sitting on a throne (ba-dum-tish).

Also, if you see the rating of PG-13 and thought it’s okay to bring your kid, think again. I brought my nephew and the number of times I used the popcorn box to cover his face is countless. So if you want to bring them, be prepared for that and the “Mom, it’s scary” comments every 5 minutes. But I mean, you have a choice between this movie or Annabelle. I would choose this one many times over. I would rather have dreams of half-naked Luke Evans than having nightmares of dolls coming to get me.

I give this movie a 3 out of 5.

Siti is just simply a Singaporean girl who has nothing better to do than watch movies and TV shows, listen to music and read books because, let's face it, what else can she, a non-adventurer girl, do in her spare time in this small island? This blog is for her to post her more "professional" reviews of movies, TV shows, books and music and as such, this blog is not spoiler-free so be warned. She may tend to get a little fangirly but fangirling is part of her life that she would not like to get rid of. When she is not sitting on her bottom doing this, you can find her going to work as a project manager in an online research panel company. However, that is the more boring (if that is even remotely possible) side of her life that she does not want to ever share.
