Landline by Rainbow Rowell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
What if your life turns to crap and you find that you have a magical phone to call back to the past and try to fix it? Welcome to Georgie McCool’s life.
Georgie is a working mom of two with the perfect husband, Neal, and a perfect career as a comedy writer. But is it really? Perfect, that is? When the show that she had worked on since school with her best friend, the very good-looking Seth, was picked up by a network, she, Seth and Scotty, their teammate, had to work through to Christmas to write episodes for the show – Christmas, when Georgie was supposed to fly with Neal and their kids to Omaha, Neal’s hometown. Frustrated, Neal continued on with the plan and flew to Omaha with the kids, leaving Georgie behind. When Neal didn’t pick up any of her calls, Georgie knew that her marriage might be in trouble. But was that the only sign?
I love Rainbow Rowell’s writing – easy to read and very relatable. Sure, I’m not in my late-thirties with two kids and a husband (and a writing career with a good-looking best friend) but I can still relate to her feelings of dilemma and eventual realization and guilt. I don’t have to be in the same situation as her to feel that and that’s what I like about the book. Also, I love how she write the past and the present, back and forth, without disrupting the flow of the story and confusing the readers.
So, I do recommend the book to all those who have read her other books, “Fangirl” and “Eleanor and Park”. “Landline” is an adult book and not YA like the other two but it’s still as awesome and it shows that Rainbow Rowell is not just a YA author.
