A Grimm Warning by Chris Colfer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I do not actually know how to start writing my thoughts about this book without repeating myself like a broken record.
“The Land of Stories: A Grimm Warning” continues from the last book. We follow the journey of Alex and Conner as they grow into teenage-hood and living separate lives as twins. Alex, as we know, decided to live in the fairy tale world and became Fairy Godmother’s apprentice while Conner lived in the OtherWorld, with the glass mirror being his only way to communicate with his sister in the Land of Stories as the portal was closed. Or so we thought. Conner was invited to Germany to witness the reading of three unreleased stories from the Brothers Grimm only to find out that it had a secret warning of a probable invasion of Land of Stories. What was thought to be an innocent school trip became another fairy tale adventure for Conner and he must find a way to save his sister and grandmother.
We’ve always thought of fairy tale world as some other-worldly place where everyone sings and everything is honky dory. What I love about the series is not everything is so perfect because nothing ever is, not even fairy tale royalties. Chris Colfer wrote that world to be more parallel to our world – there were political disputes between the different kingdoms, discrimination, stereotypes, wars, etc. It’s not that perfect.
Of course, this book brings back our favourite characters like Red Riding Hood, Trollbella and Mother Goose with more new colourful ones now such as Empress Elvina, Little Bo Peep and Gretel.
The writing was simple for kids to understand but unlike fairy tales, this series make kids able to relate more with the characters than ever before. And the wit and humour in some of these characters make it enjoyable for adults as well to read because let’s get real, we all know at least one like Red Riding Hood.
Anyway, I really love it and if you’ve followed the series and haven’t yet get your hands on the latest installment, well what are you waiting for?
