Caught this movie earlier and let’s just start with the fact that I cried, no, sobbed. Animated movies that tugged at my heartstrings are good movies, I tell you that! But what I cannot tell you is what makes me cry because I would spoil the movie for you.
How To Train Your Dragon 2 followed up from the first movie when the residents of Berk accepted dragons as part of their own and became pets of sort. It took place five years later when Hiccup and gang had become young adults and… Hiccup reached puberty and became hot. How can an animated character be hot? Kudos to the Dreamworks animators for this. Anyway, Hiccup was trying to find his destiny when Berk was threatened by a villain named Drago. So, what will Hiccup and his gang of dragon riders do? Drago is joined by other new characters such as Eret (voiced by Kit Harrington) and… Hiccup’s mother! Say what? Well, you have to watch it to know what happened. I am not going to make this easy for you, buddy!
I love animated movies – they can be funny, dramatic and ridiculous all at the same time. The plot is simple for people of all ages to follow, from the 3-year-olds to the 70-year-olds. Everyone and anyone can watch animated movies. But what I love about this type of movie is that it does not fail to teach you a little thing or two about life, without confusing the young ones in the audience. In the case of this movie, Hiccup was trying to find what he wants to do in his life despite what his father wanted him to do and at the same time, trying not to disappoint him – the one person he respected and loved the most. I think we can all identify with that.
Also, who does not love dragons? They are the stars of this sequel. They remind you of little puppies who spouted fire from their mouths, especially Toothless. Everytime I see Toothless, I want a dragon. But then I remember, I do not come from Berk nor am I an animated character. Such unfairness!
Another thing I do love about this movie is the little details. I was not watching in 3D and yet I can see each and every single dragon scales and Hiccup’s stubble. When people think animation, they will think Disney or Pixar. Dreamworks rarely got credit for all the movies they come out with. But after How To Train Your Dragon and Rise of the Guardians, people sit up and take notice. Disney/Pixar has gotten a contender in the animation industry.
If you have not watched the movie and planned to, go and watch it! Bring your kids or other people’s kids! Bring your parents and grandparents! It’s for everyone.
I give this movie a 4 out of 5 because I enjoy it very much till I cried. Literally.
