Over the weekends, I caught the latest movie, Maleficent and let’s just say, I absolutely love what I would call twisted fairy tales – the retelling of the fairy tales that you loved when you were just tiny lil’ kiddos, with a twist. This movie is exactly what it’s about.
Maleficent is told in the viewpoint of one of Disney‘s famous villains named, well, Maleficent, who cursed Princess Aurora, aka Sleeping Beauty, to eternal sleep, and could only be awaken by a true love’s kiss. We are all familiar with the story. But this movie is not what we all knew.
The fairy tales we grew up with were pretty clear-cut in its storylines, probably to make it simpler for children to understand – good people were good, evil people were evil. Simple. But as we all grew older and probably slightly wiser, we knew that’s not how the real world goes. There is always a story behind everything and everyone. That’s what the movie is about. Was Maleficent born evil? How was she like when she was younger? Who was Maleficent? That’s the question. We never knew who Maleficent was in the fairy tale. It was all about Princess Aurora.
After the popularity that was Frozen and the surprising ending of an act of true love, Maleficent took the same route. True love does not just mean a love between a princess and her knight in shining armour. Love, in general, could be between any individuals – parents, siblings (as Frozen was about), friends, etc. Disney is starting to take on that definition after Frozen and now Maleficent, which is a good thing for kids to know.
Another thing I love about the movie is Angelina Jolie’s acting. It was absolutely brilliant to watch. The grace of the character she carried in the earlier parts of the movie, the revenge she harboured soon after and then, the dilemma she carried later on in the movie. I should also add that she has a to-die-for body for a 38-year-old. If you didn’t know that she did a double mastectomy to prevent breast cancer, you would never know it at all.
With that said, though, I wish I could give it a higher rating than the 3.5 out of 5 that I’m giving for this movie. I just felt that there should be more… something. More engaging characters, maybe? Other than Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning and Sam Riley, who did a great job in this movie, I was not really impressed by the rest. Elle and Sam did brilliantly well acting opposite Angelina, but I’m unsure about the rest. Don’t take it the wrong way – I do like it but I’m not falling head over heels in love with it.
Should you watch the movie? Yes. If you love fairy tales, give this one a go.
