Movie Review: The Amazing Spiderman 2

Earlier today was the second time I watched this movie, partly because I promised my 9-year-old nephew that I would bring him to watch the movie, which he did for more than half of the movie before he fell asleep, and partly because I wanted to see Dane DeHaan’s face one more time. Yes, everyone, I have a new celebrity crush.

The Amazing Spiderman 2 is the sequel to The Amazing Spiderman and I have to say that this version of Spiderman is my favourite. I was not so impressed by the first three Spiderman movie franchise, maybe because I very much love a sarcastic Spiderman and Andrew Garfield was perfect for the role. And with Dane DeHaan given the role as Harry Osborn, it made the movie better for me. I do prefer him as Green Goblin than James Franco.

Anyway, the sequel follows Peter Parker who was still troubled by the death of Gwen Stacy’s father whom he had made a promise with to stay away from Gwen, and which he didn’t keep. There was also a new villain named Electro, played by Jamie Foxx, who has the ability to control electricity. Before he was an enemy of Spiderman, he was Max Dillon, an employee of OsCorp and a very big fan of the superhero. The sequel also brings back Harry Osborn, Peter’s childhood best friend who discovered that he has the same disease that killed his father. We also get to find out more about Richard Parker’s motive of leaving his son behind and the cause of his and his wife’s death.

Other than the fact that Andrew and Emma Stone were great in their individual roles, I have to say that Dane just won me as Harry Osborn. As mentioned earlier, I do prefer him than James Franco. Dane did incredibly well as the 20-year-old guy who had a troubled childhood and a tumultuous relationship with his father, Norman. The bromance between Peter and Harry were made more believable here with Andrew and Dane.

Another thing I do love about the movie is the camerawork. I do not have to watch it in 3D to make me feel dizzy watching Spiderman swinging from one building to another. The camera was in Spiderman’s point-of-view to make us, the audience, feel like we’re the webby superhero. I felt like I was in a rollercoaster the entire time. Beautiful piece of work but woah, dizziness.

I do have to give a warning to those who have epilepsy here. The scenes with Electro are so bright and understandably so since Electro controls electricity. An example is a scene at Times Square with flashing bright lights. I do not have epilepsy but it made my eyes hurt. So, if you do have epilepsy, please be warned about this. You may watch but you might need to have someone who might be able to help you to shield your eyes away from the screen. It would help if the person has watched the movie before you do so that they know when to do so.

To make your life a little easier, I did a little research on the end-credits scene. There was a clip shown after the end credits. However, unlike other Marvel movies, it’s not about the future Spiderman movie but a marketing ploy for X-Men: Days of Future Past. The easter egg lies on the fact that you have to turn your Shazam app on while “It’s On Again” was playing during the credits. You will receive images on your phone. Don’t worry, it will not be a virus but that’ll be a clue to future Spiderman movies.

I greatly enjoy the movie and if you have not watched it, I do recommend it. You may bring your kids along if you want it to be a family outing. I give this movie a 4 out of 5.

Siti is just simply a Singaporean girl who has nothing better to do than watch movies and TV shows, listen to music and read books because, let's face it, what else can she, a non-adventurer girl, do in her spare time in this small island? This blog is for her to post her more "professional" reviews of movies, TV shows, books and music and as such, this blog is not spoiler-free so be warned. She may tend to get a little fangirly but fangirling is part of her life that she would not like to get rid of. When she is not sitting on her bottom doing this, you can find her going to work as a project manager in an online research panel company. However, that is the more boring (if that is even remotely possible) side of her life that she does not want to ever share.
