Cut & Run by Abigail Roux
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Well, this took a long time to finish. I had reasons (or excuses) – I was distracted by other books to read and also because I sort of gave up with this book.
I love crime thriller books and crime thriller and gay characters? It should be right down my alley because as a fangirl with a favourite OTP, special agents who are also lovers is a plot that I’ve read plenty of times in fanfictions. And what better way than to read a novel with original characters, right?
So, yes, I gave up halfway through because it didn’t manage to hold my attention. But I decided that since I managed to go through 10 pages of “Fifty Shades of Grey” and the entire book of “Divergent”, I should be able to get through this so I spent the entire weekend finishing the rest of the book. Thankfully, I didn’t forget the characters or the plot itself.
“Cut & Run” is a series, I believe, and it tells the story of two agents who initially hated each other’s guts but were put together due to their experiences. A series of murders put Ty and Zane together to try to solve the crime that involved the FBI personally when two agents were taken down while trying to solve the case. But if you think they’re going to hate each other the entire time, let’s just say it’s a love-hate relationship. Love. Get it?
Anyway, after the 200th page, I find that it got better and not because of the sizzling chemistry of the two characters (of course not… *clears throat*), it’s the plot itself actually. I love not knowing who the killer is. I love when books are like that, just pulling you along and then hit you in the face when the actual killer was revealed. It just came out of left field. I didn’t guess that at all and I love it.
I think it could be written better. I’ve read better fanfictions with similar premise I’m sure but it’s a good try from these two authors. I’m not going to beat them down for it because I did enjoy it even though the way the book was written threw me off sometimes.
Will I read the second book? Maybe. I’m a little bit unsure at the moment whether I want to. The little snippet of the sequel at the end of the book did piqued my interest though.
