I watched this movie twice and it’s not because I really loved it but because it’s a superheroes movie. The thought that my nephew would enjoy it made me decide to watch it the second time. It was a good decision as well because due to the immense headache I had while watching the movie the first time, I forgot some of what happened in the movie.
So, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger, obviously. Here, we saw Captain America working closely with the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D in missions, including Black Widow. Along the way, he found out that his nemesis, Hydra, was not actually dead. Well, he was dead but his idea wasn’t. I would tell you more but I couldn’t because if I do, I would have revealed the entire story plot. But the one thing that I could reveal is the fact that Steve Roger’s dearest best friend, Bucky, who was thought to be dead in the first movie, wasn’t. Basically, this movie has a lot of not-actually-dead people. It’d be kind of creepy if it’s a horror movie. This movie also introduced us to a couple of new characters – one is Falcon (played by Anthony Mackie), who was a war veteran just like Steve, and another is Agent 13 aka Kate (played by Revenge‘s Emily VanCamp), who might be Steve’s love interest.
This movie has both drama and comedic moments, which you would expect in any Marvel movies. The comedic moments might not be as much as Iron Man movies but it does bring a lot of laughter in the theatre. Drama, or as a fangirl would call it FEELS, moment were a lot to do with Steve and Bucky, and also Steve and Peggy. You would expect these due to Steve’s background – he is literally an immortal and technically 95 years old while a lot of his comrades and friends were dead. Peggy, his first love, was already very old by this time. He was first and foremost a soldier too and no matter how invincible he might be, he was like any other war veterans, grippling with guilt and not knowing what to do now that they left the war zone. It was good to see that they touched on that.
It also has a lot of action and suspense, which kids could easily follow but the comedic ones, not so much. The jokes might just go over any kids’ heads and I brought a nine-year-old with me. While I was laughing my head off as Natasha was trying to match-make Steve with Kate and kicking people’s asses at the same time, my nephew was just blankly staring at the screen, a look shared by any kids in the theatre.
Captain America is the second Marvel movie to come out this year and it is a prelude to what might come next. If you have watched any Marvel movies, you would know not to leave the theatre after the end credits because it might give you a clue to the plot in the next Marvel movie. It might not be for another Captain America movie but ANY other Marvel movie. I won’t reveal to you what are the additional scenes at the end of the movie but it looks very very interesting and I can’t wait for the next Marvel movie.
I would give this movie a 4.5 out of 5. If you have read my past reviews, you know I have not given any movie a perfect score. I won’t give this one too. I have my reasons – no movie is perfect. Not even my favourites. But it was one hell of a ride and Marvel movies are still in my list of favourite movies to watch.
