Movie Review: Pompeii

ImageWhen a movie is based on or inspired by a true historical event, it’d be harder to make a story seemed real when it’s obviously fake. But some people had successfully done so, and one of them would be James Cameron for Titanic. Paul W. S. Anderson might not be as successful as James Cameron, however.

Pompeii is inspired by one of the most tragic natural disaster to ever happened on our Mother Earth, when Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried the citizens of Pompeii underneath layers and layers of lava and ash and whose bodies, till this day, are still very much preserved and in positions that would leave anyone’s hearts broken.

The movie itself is about a gladiator named Milo (Kit Harrington) who had to race against time (note: we all know the lava and ash took everybody out in seconds so he didn’t really have that much time, to be honest) to save the love of his life, Cassia (Emily Browning), the daughter of a wealthy merchant, Severus (Jared Harris). Unfortunately, she was betrothed to the evil and corrupt Roman idiot, Covrus (Kiefer Sutherland), who, by the way, killed the entire family of Milo. So that means revenge! But did Milo get to save Cassia and at the same time, avenge the death of his family before Mount Vesuvius wiped all of them out? I’m not going to spoil that for you.

The movie is trying to replicate the success of Titanic but I don’t think it is going to have the same result. Maybe because it is harder to grasp a love story borne out of a volcano erupting and literally burying thousands of people alive as opposed to a ship sinking.

But the good thing that comes out of me spending $12 on this movie is Kit Harrington (also known as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones). I have come to the realization that I should add “kiss Kit Harrington” in my bucket list. Of course, to tick that off the bucket list, I would have to first be where he is and then find him. Both are quite impossible for me because he’s also a celebrity. So, I could kiss (ha ha) that part of my bucket list goodbye. No, seriously though, how is that guy so hot?

So, I would give this movie a 2 out of 5. It is not such a disaster but it’s just unbelievable and so very Hollywood. If you want to know more about what happened in Pompeii, I’d rather you watch the many documentaries about it. It’s better, trust me.

The trailer…

Siti is just simply a Singaporean girl who has nothing better to do than watch movies and TV shows, listen to music and read books because, let's face it, what else can she, a non-adventurer girl, do in her spare time in this small island? This blog is for her to post her more "professional" reviews of movies, TV shows, books and music and as such, this blog is not spoiler-free so be warned. She may tend to get a little fangirly but fangirling is part of her life that she would not like to get rid of. When she is not sitting on her bottom doing this, you can find her going to work as a project manager in an online research panel company. However, that is the more boring (if that is even remotely possible) side of her life that she does not want to ever share.
