For this week, the only movie that actually interests me is RoboCop, which is a remake of the ’80s movie of the same name. I’m an ’80s girl and I always feel that remakes hardly ever did justice to the original. But, I shall take that all back because this remake of RoboCop might actually be better than the original.
RoboCop centers around a character named Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) who was murdered by criminals and was brought back to life by a scientist, Dr. Norton, played by one of my favourite actors, Gary Oldman, to be a superhuman cyborg, cleaning the streets from criminals. This movie also stars Samuel L. Jackson who played the role of Patrick Novak, host of the fictional show called The Novak Element, a huge supporter of military robots, and Michael Keaton, the owner of OmniCorp who worked with Dr. Norton to build the cyborg.
I expected it to be a mere average movie after watching the trailer. But lo and behold, I really have to learn from what I said in one of my movie reviews before – do not judge a movie by its trailer. It has the action sequences, emotional background story and even funny moments. I have to admit, I don’t remember much of the original RoboCop movie but I don’t remember it being this funny either. It had the whole theatre laughing, mostly due to the antics of Patrick Novak and the marketing guy from OmniCorp. Also, another advantage that this remake has over the original movie is better special effects and technology to make everything looks believable enough. Another thing that rings true is the media and how biased they can be and the greed of corporations, which had me rolling my eyes, because it’s so true to reality.
It also doesn’t hurt that this movie has actors like Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Keaton to bring in the star value.
So, does Siti recommend this movie? Yes, please do watch it. It’s PG-13 though so if you were to bring your kids, be prepared for some pre-love-making scene.
