Movie Review: Dallas Buyers Club

ImageI have been waiting for this movie to arrive in this small island since last year when I saw a clip of Jared Leto as Rayon. I fell in love and I knew I had to watch it. It’s something I should not miss. And that has got to be the best decision I’ve ever made.

Dallas Buyers Club was inspired by true events – about Ron Woodroof who was contracted with AIDS due to the lifestyle that he had – drug abuse and unprotected sex. AIDS then, in the 80s, was known as the “disease that gays were contracted with” and Ron struggled with people’s perception that he’s gay, being the homophobe that he was. Eventually, he found that there was a medicine called AZT that was on trial. Through illegal dealings, he had access to AZT but he got worst instead of better and a doctor from New Mexico prescribed him with a less toxic medicine. Instead of the 30 days that the doctor in the US gave him, the medicine prolonged his life. From there, he decided to open up the Dallas Buyers Club with his newfound friend, Rayon, a transgender, selling these medicine.

Other than watching Ron rebelling against the authorities, we saw friendship bloomed between Ron and Rayon. I found that very heartwarming because Ron was a homophobe and for him to treat Rayon with such care was beautiful.

I can see why the two actors are nominated for the Oscars. They truly deserved it. I hardly recognized Matthew McConaughey. He lost a lot of weight for the role so much that you could see his cheekbones. And he put on the redneck accent. He was Ron Woodroof. Brilliant acting from him. He’s a serious contender for Oscars. I would not be surprised if he won. As for Jared Leto, no words can describe how fantastic his acting was. If Jared does not win the Oscars for his role as Rayon, I will be heartbroken. He embodies it. I was just awestruck by him and it reminds me of why I admire him as an actor and how much I miss him acting. He should act more (but please don’t abandon 30 Seconds To Mars). The scene when Rayon said she doesn’t want to die and the scene between her and her father are so emotionally charged I teared up.

This movie is beautiful and inspirational. Ron was the unlikely hero. He questioned the authority and he fought for people who was suffering from the disease like him. While watching the movie, I was frustrated for Ron because I don’t see why these people should pay thousands of dollars to buy a medicine that would kill them even faster than the disease itself. Why couldn’t they choose a medicine that would help them? Why were authorities stopping it? If it elicits such emotions from me, then it’s a great movie.

So, with that said, if you are above 21 years old, I do recommend this movie as a must-watch.
