The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Well, we all know who Robert Galbraith really is now and let’s not pretend that I didn’t buy this book because of the real writer behind the pseudonym – J.K. Rowling. I love this woman and admire her greatly and so I decided to pick up my first ever crime fiction book after a very long time.
This book is as thick as her Harry Potter books. But that’s not the reason why it took me so long to read it – since November last year, in fact. No. As much as I love Rowling, I wasn’t used to her writing this. The beginning was so slow it was like pulling teeth. It was like reading “Order of the Phoenix”, which is my least favourite Harry Potter books. I literally wanted to just give up and maybe donate it to the library. But I decided I need to give this book a shot because I did see a potential in it.
The premise is interesting – a former soldier turned private detective who was down on his luck with his business and private life, jumped on the opportunity to solve the mysterious death of a very famous supermodel. And in between all of that, we get the background story of the main character, Cormoran Strike. The book picked up maybe about half of the way through when he started to get all the clues to solve the crime. But all the clues still didn’t… err… clue me in on the end result because I was so surprised by the ending. I didn’t even guessed it and that’s what make me want to recommend this book – the ending. What makes a good crime fiction book, for me, is when you cannot even guessed the end result. I didn’t. I’m good at this but I didn’t expect it at all. And I am still surprised by the ending. I just finished it ten minutes ago and I still can’t wrap my head around it.
So, anyway, yes, if you like crime fiction or maybe want to give it a try, I do recommend it.
