Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I saw this book in the bookstore and I immediately picked it up because, if you’re a fangirl and you don’t pick up a book called “Fangirl”, you’d be an idiot. I would like to think I’m not and so I did just that. I picked up and read the first 10 pages of the book and immediately fell in love with it.
It’s about Cather Avery, who is in a fictional Simon Snow fandom and not only is she in the fandom – she’s a fandom famous Magicath, the writer for “Carry On, Simon”, a fanfiction series based on Simon Snow and his relationship with Baz, which garnered tens of thousands of views. In real life, she’s a college student struggling to juggle between real life and life in fandom.
When I bought this book, I had no expectation. But it was so wonderfully written and Rainbow Rowell nailed the life of a fangirl. It was never easy to tell other people in your real life – your family and your friends – why you’re so in love with a fictional world and why you read fanfictions and, for some, why you write them. And the juggling between fandom life and real life are depicted pretty well.
I am a fangirl and I did write fanfictions and I just felt that this book is literally a biography about me even though I do not write famous fanfiction that has tens of thousands of views or have a gorgeous boyfriend (yet). Anyway, if you’re a fangirl or fanboy, pick this book up and enjoy going: “OH MY GOD, THIS IS SO ME! I DID THAT!” because at some point, you’d totally get how Cather Avery feels.
Also, is it just me or is the Simon Snow series a nod to the Harry Potter fandom? Simon and Baz rivalry reminds me of Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy. Hmmm…
