The Enchantress Returns by Chris Colfer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Judging from the book cover, “The Land of Stories: The Enchantress Returns” by Chris Colfer, it seems to be a children’s book and I guess it could be a children’s book, since it is about fairy tales. But the maturity in some of the dialogues would put it in the category of, at least, a young adult book. A six-year-old kid would not understand the meaning behind some of the dialogues in the book. I mean, they would because the words used are simple enough to understand but the meaning behind the words would not reach a young kid until they are old enough to get it.
That’s what I love about this sequel to the first book, “The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell”. Other than the twists in the fairy tale stories I grew up with, the book is filled with little gems like the sassy Mother Goose (who knew Mother Goose would be a sassy fairy) and the ever vain and seemingly selfish Red Riding Hood, and both thoughtful and inspiring quotes littered all over the book.
However, there is one critique that I have about this book: It started off really slow and then picked up pace somewhere in the middle of the book. So, it took me a while to get into it. Some people who would judge how good a book could be in the first 10-20 pages would be disappointed. I am one of those people but I know the potential of Chris Colfer. Maybe because I’m biased and a big fan of his but I have read the first book and I have read “Struck by Lightning”. I know his potential and I was not disappointed by his writing. He has a great imagination to come up with all these characters, personalities and a whole new world.
It’s a good book to read if you love fairy tales and you want to continue to find out the magical journey of the Bailey twins.
