TV Review: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D – 0-8-4

ImageI missed my review for the pilot of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D but I certainly would not want to miss writing my thoughts on the second episode of this new Marvel TV show. But my briefest thought on the pilot was a bit “meh”. I wasn’t really impressed by the casting with the exception of Clark Gregg obviously reprising his role as Agent Coulson. But this latest episode is better than the pilot.

We had a little brief history of a possible past love (Camilla Reyes) of the ever likeable Agent Coulson and also what may have happened to Agent May in Bahrain. But I hope we get to know a little bit more about her because seeing her being grumpier than Grumpy Cat for two episodes can be a little bit annoying even though I feel that she kicked ass. And I have always wanted more ladies on screen who kicked ass like a ninja. Girl power! But you know who else kicked ass? The scientists – Fitz and Simmons. They are slowly inching their way to be one of my favourites. Maybe it’s the accents. I’m biased.

Besides all that, what I love about this TV show is that it ties up to the Marvel movies that we watched. This week, 0-8-4 represents a piece of HYDRA technology powered by the Tesseract energy. Remember, Captain America? Exactly! I love that this TV show is basically like a side-story to what these agents, whom we always saw in these movies, do. And there was also a mention of the hammer, aka Thor, which is brilliant. I guess it’s all due to the fact that Joss Whedon helmed this entire thing. I can’t imagine if it’s not under Joss Whedon but someone else – it’ll probably be a whole lot of mess.

But of course, it’s not always sunny. I find that the visual effects are not as good as what we had seen in the movies but maybe it’s because movies are grander in scale so studios have more budgets. When it comes to TV shows, it’s a smaller scale and lower budget so they won’t have much room for better visual effects. But the plots (so far) made up for it.

I talked earlier about how the TV shows ties up to the movies. Last week, there was an appearance by Agent Hall, a role reprised by Cobie Smulders and this week, we saw Nick Fury, played by none other than Samuel L. Jackson. It was actually a really hilarious scene at the end with Agent Coulson. So, I’m really excited to see what else Joss Whedon has in store throughout the series. Will we ever see Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) and Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton (Hawkeye)? Or will we see Robert Downey Jr making an appearance as Tony Stark (he was mentioned in this episode)? Well, we shall just wait and see what Joss Whedon has up his sleeves for us. As the show progresses, it will be interesting especially after this episode. I’m very sceptical about Skye. As Nick Fury said – she’s a risk. Hmm…

Promo for next episode…

Siti is just simply a Singaporean girl who has nothing better to do than watch movies and TV shows, listen to music and read books because, let's face it, what else can she, a non-adventurer girl, do in her spare time in this small island? This blog is for her to post her more "professional" reviews of movies, TV shows, books and music and as such, this blog is not spoiler-free so be warned. She may tend to get a little fangirly but fangirling is part of her life that she would not like to get rid of. When she is not sitting on her bottom doing this, you can find her going to work as a project manager in an online research panel company. However, that is the more boring (if that is even remotely possible) side of her life that she does not want to ever share.
