Movie Review: The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

ImageIt has been a while since I’ve written a movie review. And the first movie I watched for this movie review comeback is The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Sometimes, I ask myself why. Other times, why not? This is one of those times when I asked myself why did I watch this movie?

Let me just firstly admit that the sole reason why I wanted to watch this movie was because my Tumblr dash, at one point, was filled with posts of Magnus and Alec. Pages and pages of these two on my Tumblr dashboard. I can totally see the reason why these two are “shippable”. But that is not the point of this very post. This very post is for me to be very objective in my reviews and I shall be a rational reviewer (even though I may be writing this while half-asleep).

I would also like to admit that I tried reading the book but three pages in, I put it down and gave up. So, I came into the movie theatre with no expectation at all. None. Zilch.

Before I write my review, I shall summarize the entire movie in a few words: Demons. Vampires. Shadowhunters. Die bitch die. A cup. Werewolves. Love triangle. Incest. Magnus. Alec.

Yeah, that should be it. Okay, fine, that was a horrible summary. I did say I am writing this half-asleep. Now comes my review…

It is funny at some parts, no lie, and parts that made me jump off my seat because I am a scaredy cat (there’s a creepy young girl that seriously looked like it came out of some horror movie). But there are also one very scene that just totally made me facepalm so hard I got myself a headache – a scene so cheesy you can make a cheesecake from the extreme cheesiness. A scene where a girl fell into a guy’s arms accidentally and they looked into each other’s eyes and kissed and then it began to rain. Why?

But let’s be positive: What made this whole movie bearable for me was not the leading characters but the supporting ones. Simon was adorable. I am in love with the guy. I just want to hug him and tell him, I’ll love him. I will, Simon. You are a catch. Magnus and Alec: Their “relationship” is not explicit because I guess this is the beginning but the less-than-5-minutes-in-total scenes that they have together was really cute. I love how Magnus seemed like a cold warlock but he was there to help when Alec was dying. I really wish that I could watch more of these two. I can see why they have a fanbase of their own.

But no matter how many movies like these are made, nothing will ever surpass the epicness that was Harry Potter. The only other young adult novel turned movie that can be at the same level of epic as Harry Potter is The Hunger Games. And if you are looking for the next epic young adult movie, this movie is not going to be it, I’m afraid. It doesn’t give me the same level of excitement that Harry Potter and The Hunger Games brought.

Before I ramble into the morning, if you want to watch the movie, go in with no expectation and you will definitely enjoy it. But don’t bring your kids. It is not for kids. They might have nightmares because of some creepy characters in it. So be warned.

The trailer…

Siti is just simply a Singaporean girl who has nothing better to do than watch movies and TV shows, listen to music and read books because, let's face it, what else can she, a non-adventurer girl, do in her spare time in this small island? This blog is for her to post her more "professional" reviews of movies, TV shows, books and music and as such, this blog is not spoiler-free so be warned. She may tend to get a little fangirly but fangirling is part of her life that she would not like to get rid of. When she is not sitting on her bottom doing this, you can find her going to work as a project manager in an online research panel company. However, that is the more boring (if that is even remotely possible) side of her life that she does not want to ever share.
