This week, there will be seven songs, all from Stevie Wonder (Wonder-ful, get it, get it?). What’s the plot? No idea except that Kurt Hummel, Mercedes Jones and Mike Chang are back at McKinley High. For what? No idea. Well, I know that Mercedes Jones is back to coach New Directions on singing and Mike on dancing but I don’t know why Kurt is there. For fashion? Whatever it was, I’m here to review the music because if the plot sucks, at least we have the music. And if you don’t love Stevie Wonder, get out of here!
“Uptight (Everything’s Alright)” sung by Cassandra (Kate Hudson)
I’m not a big fan of Cassandra or Kate Hudson but I have to admit that girl can sang! Well, not as great as, in my opinion, Amber Riley, who is the best female singer in the Glee cast, but Kate can still sing really well. And this song is really fun and something that one can’t help but dance along to.
“Higher Ground” sung by Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley)
I didn’t know how much I missed Amber’s voice until now. And this is one of my favourite songs from Stevie and it’s apt that it goes to Ms Riley but the recording of this annoyed me because the background music drowned out Amber’s voice. Hopefully the quality of the song in the episode itself is better than this studio recording.
“For Once In My Life” sung by Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) with the New Directions
I have nothing to critique for this. You know Kevin can sing the hell out of Michael Jackson’s songs. But you also know Kevin can sing the hell out of Stevie Wonder’s songs. He just has that voice that fits the R&B-ish and soul-ish songs. This is like 1st grade Math for him. It’s not even calculus!
“I Wish” sung by Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist)
I’m not familiar with this song, which probably made me enjoy this song a little lesser than the others. But that doesn’t mean it sucks. I just don’t enjoy it that much. I was also kind of distracted by a gif on Tumblr. It is a fun song though.
“Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours” sung by Kitty Wilde (Becca Tobin)
Becca doesn’t have the strongest of voices on Glee. But then, Glee producers did it right with this song. One does not need to have a strong voice to sing this song as long as you don’t suck. If she was to sing “Higher Ground”, then I would be afraid but she didn’t. She doesn’t get that many solos. So, it’s nice to hear someone that’s not Marley singing a solo.
“Superstition” sung by Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley), Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) and Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist) with New Directions
Individually, they sound great and you know they have great voices and each has their own strength. But if you have Amber singing the song first and then Darren and Melissa coming in next, no matter how great Darren’s and Melissa’s voices are, it cannot surpass Amber’s. She killed the song. Of course no one can surpass Stevie but Amber did it great justice. No matter how much I love Darren, he came in after Amber and it doesn’t match up to Amber’s. The same goes with Melissa. If this is the old crew, you know this song would have gone to Amber and Naya. Both of them would have killed this.
“You Are The Sunshine Of My Life” sung by Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer)
I think everyone knows my favourite is Chris Colfer (and Darren Criss). But this is not my favourite song from him. On the other hand, it still makes me smile. From the moment he sang the song, I just grinned from ear to ear. This is the thing I love about Chris. When he sings a song, you somehow could feel the emotion through the song. So, if it’s “Defying Gravity”, you could feel what the song is about. He emotes well on screen when he’s acting but some forget that he was able to do the same when he’s singing. And this song may not be his best but it makes me smile so hard that my cheeks hurt. It’s also not often to hear him sing the lower register. He’s always singing high notes but here, he’s using his lower register and it sounds as good as his high register. So, I hope he sings more songs with lower notes because it’s really beautiful.
So that’s it! These are the songs for the second last episode of Glee. Stay tuned on Friday or Saturday for my recap!
