It has to be said that the first post that I make on this new blog of mine would be of “Spartacus”.
I’ll be honest. I just caught up with the show. I saw gifs of the show on my Tumblr dashboard but never really thought of watching it until it tickles my curiosity and I decide that there’s just no harm watching the show. If I do not like it, I can just stop watching it.
I got hooked.
It’s a show with history, violence, sex and hot naked guys and girls all in one neat package. Who wouldn’t like it?
Anyways, back to the latest episode, the second last episode before the series finale. From here on, be warned that it’s full of spoilers so read on with care.
The last episode, on the Roman camp: Kore fled Crassus’ camp and joined the Rebel Army to get away from Tiberius. Caesar found out the reason Kore left and threatened Tiberius but Tiberius raped him. On the Rebel camp: The Rebel army was separated – Spartacus led the slaves to the Alps while Crixus led those who wanted to have Roman blood spilled battle it out. Agron broke up with Nasir so that Nasir could live and joined Crixus. Crixus’ army met Crassus’ army. Agron fell to Tiberius’ sword and Crixus was speared through the back by Tiberius again. Crixus fell and was beheaded in front of Naevia.
We began the latest episode with Spartacus and a few gladiators attacking a bunch of soldiers we would think were from Crassus’ army but we found out later that, nope, not Crassus’ men but Pompey’s. Oh dear.
Nasir announced that there was a rider approaching the Rebel camp and it appeared to be Naevia carrying the head of Crixus. It’s time to get the Kleenex everyone. Naevia was numb with grief, but with Spartacus egging her on so that they can share the grief, she told of how Crixus fell during the battle by the hands of Tiberius. Goddamn Tiberius. RIP undefeated Gaul. Nasir then came in and asked for Agron, whether he shared the same fate with Crixus or did he live. By this time, I couldn’t take it anymore. First, Naevia’s face. Then, Nasir’s kicked puppy face. Tell me how can my heart take all this grief, dear God.
Naevia then revealed why Crassus spared her life and Spartacus went all strategy to avenge the death of his brothers and sisters. SPARTA!!!
We then go to Marcus and Tiberius discussing their next strategy. One of Crassus’ soldier announced that Pompey’s soldiers wanted to see him. Pompey’s soldier then revealed that Pompey requested for meeting. In the background, Caesar was secretly plotting.
Tiberius told his father not to go because Pompey will get his glory. Caesar agreed and told Marcus to let Tiberius go instead. AH-HA! I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE CAESAR, YOU CUNNING ROMAN!
We went back to the Rebel camp. Naevia asked Kore why she didn’t kill Marcus and I thought she was about to murder Kore in all her grief but didn’t.
Tiberius and his soldiers reached Pompey’s camp and… revealed… Spartacus instead. Ha! That was a good one. And Spartacus kept them as slaves to “honor the dead”. Oh boy… this be fun!
We then moved on to sex between Caesar and a slave. I guess this will fill up the sex quota of the episode?
Tiberius and his soldiers were led to the Rebel camp all bruised and shackled and it was revealed that Spartacus wanted to hold the games to honor the dead similar to what happened to him and his brothers who became gladiators. SPARTAAAAAAAA!!!
Now on to one of the heartbreaking parts of the episode. Back in the Roman camp, a Roman soldier held a pail of water and poured it over a man who is revealed to be Agron! Agron is alive! But he was beaten repeatedly and chained to a pole. But that did not stop him from cursing the Roman soldier. You go, Agron!
And then we see him crucified. Okay, I can’t watch this. The scream, oh god, the scream.
And then it was announced that a Pompey envoy wanted to see Crassus. It was revealed then that Crassus was duped and that it was Spartacus’ men who acted as Pompey’s men to trap him. Crassus then sent Caesar off to trade his son for the 500 men that he captured.
In the Rebel camp, everyone was preparing for the games. Kore came to see Tiberius who revealed that Marcus was still in love with Kore. While Kore was moved by that, she still wanted Tiberius dead.
In the meantime, Spartacus’ best men and women were ready for the games and I’m proud to see Naevia and Nasir among them. Nasir, in particular, has grown stronger and stronger. You can see vengeance in his eyes. He wanted to honor Agron. Yes, you go, little man!
And let the Games begin… one of Tiberius’ men were led to the “arena” but he refused to fight so Spartacus just killed him easily. Spartacus requested for two men and that’s when it truly began. Let’s face it, regular soldiers against the bringer of rain and the God of the Arena are never gonna win. They couldn’t even win against Nasir and his spear. He looked hot with that spear, by the way. And Castus obviously noticed that. Damn that guy! Nasir doesn’t love you back, stop it!
The final battle was between Naevia and Tiberius while Kore looked on. But before Naevia could kill Tiberius, Spartacus stopped it to reveal that Caesar came forward with a trade – hand Tiberius over alive and Spartacus would get 500 of his men back. Dammit! I really wanted Naevia to get her revenge! But I am also of two minds about it – on one hand, I want him dead because he killed Crixus and raped both Kore and Caesar but on the other hand, I felt pity for Tiberius because he was still a young boy and all he wanted was to have his father’s attention.
As Naevia and Spartacus brought Tiberius back to Caesar, Kore pushed through the crowd and killed Tiberius. Okay, that’s my second choice of person to kill Tiberius. But anyway, Spartacus and Caesar were both pissed – Spartacus because his 500 men would suffer and Caesar because he would die too. But Kore told Spartacus that Crassus would still honor his words if she returned. Hmmm… not too sure about that, Kore.
Tiberius’ body was brought back and Marcus was seen crying over his son. This is the first time I see Marcus being a father. In the past episodes, he seemed like a horrible father to Tiberius, leading Tiberius to do what he did to get his attention. Only now do I see Marcus feeling like any father would – grief for the death of his son taken away too soon. Caesar lied that Tiberius was killed by an old man. Caesar then revealed Kore. Marcus was reunited back with Kore only for him to tell Kore to call him Dominus and not Marcus. Told you, Kore.
Back in the Rebel camp, Naevia looked on as 500 tortured and bruised men and women returned because she knew Crixus would not be part of that. Nasir, who was also looking on, then asked: “Would that those we held to heart stood among them?” This is one of my favourite scenes. Castus then came over and told him to look on because further on, Spartacus was carrying a broken and bruised Agron! Nasir’s face when he saw Agron is so… I cannot even describe it. He then walked through the crowd looking like he could not believe his eyes that Agron is still alive.
Spartacus who knew love when he sees it in front of him handed Agron over to Nasir. Nasir then gently held Agron’s face and said: “The Gods return you to my arms.” Agron then replied: “I was fool to ever leave them.” I swear, if I have a love like Nasir and Agron, I would live a fulfilled life. Castus who was watching this exchange knew that he could never have Nasir’s heart and walked away. Finally! Thank the Gods! Nasir then led Agron away, who looked completely broken. I have never seen Agron looked that broken before.
We then moved to the final scene of the episode where a funeral was done for Crixus. The reunited Nasir and Agron were there as well as Spartacus made his speech. Once again, it bears repeated that Agron looked broken. I think this may or may not play a significant role to what his character will do next episode.
After Spartacus made his speech, he passed the firing torch over to Naevia who said: “For Crixus” before she threw the torch to the funeral pyre. And the tears once again fell as one by one, names of characters we once loved were called out – Sura (with this, Laeta looked on crying. I’m not sure what this even means but it could be significant. Spartacus would never love another woman like he did Sura), Varro (my heart pains), Mira, Oenomaus, Donar, Duro, Nemetus and finally, once again, Crixus, in which everyone joined and chanted his name.
And as Spartacus called for those who are able will go to battle with Rome, you can clearly see Agron swallowing hard and closed his eyes. It looked he was reliving back to what happened during his last battle. He also looked like that would be the last thing he wanted to do – going into battle. But let’s see what will happen with his character next episode.
All in all, I love this episode but then again, there were never an episode that I don’t like in Spartacus. What I love about this one is that it sets the tone for the final episode, which I heard would be epic.
Till the next and last recap of Spartacus, SPARTAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
